QUERIDA ETNA, 2023
Acrylic and charcoal on canvas
Non stretched: ~66″ x ~66“ / 1.67 mts x 1.67 mts
Querida Etna turns volcanic turbulence into a lyrical topography. Sweeps of moss green slide into languid drips, meeting veils of slate-blue and pumice gray that echo dormant lava beds. Bare linen surfaces open fissures of quiet amid the chromatic surge. MAOF’s stratified marks resemble a dormant fault line—registering past convulsions, gathering new tensions—beckoning the observer to feel the pulse where pigment, surface and recollection converge.

This photo shows the painting “Querida Etna” in its final stage of creation at my Allen, Texas studio
The making of “Querida Etna” unfolded in layered stages: it began with a travel snapshot of Mt. Etna pinned to the studio wall, a visual spark that guided each brush-stroke. Green and ash-blue passages were laid down, scraped away, then repainted, as charcoal marks mapped out shifting contours. I repeated the cycle—paint, erase, repaint—until a single, decisive stain captured the volcanic energy I had carried back from Sicily.
